Journey by Design: Direct Flight to the New Mansarovar Airport and Road to Mount Kailash

For travellers embarking on the sacred pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, how you travel is as important as where you arrive. At Eco Trek Nepal, we believe that the transportation route should prepare you physically, mentally, and spiritually for the journey ahead. Guided by decades of experience since our founding in 1992 as an integral part of the Holy Himalaya Group, our approach reflects careful planning, respect for the holy land, and a legacy of authentic Himalayan travel.

One of the newest and highly efficient routes is flying directly to the new airport near Lake Mansarovar and Mount Kailash, followed by overland travel to the sacred sites.

Airports: Ali Pulan & Ngari Gunsa

The region closest to Kailash and Mansarovar is served by modern plateau airports developed to facilitate travel deeper into western Tibet. Among these, Eco Trek Nepal offers yatras via:

Ali Pulan Airport (APJ)

A newly opened airport in Purang County, Ngari Prefecture, close to the India‑Tibet border. This airport is a 30 minute drive, south from Kailash and Mansarovar - and our preferred option.

Ngari Gunsa Airport (NGQ)

Another close and developed airport, providing flights from major regional hubs such as Lhasa, Chengdu, Kashgar and Urumqi. Ngari Gunsa Airport is our alternative route, and a 5 hour drive from Kailash and Mansarovar

Both airports sit at high elevation and reduce overland travel time, allowing you to begin your pilgrimage closer.

International Flight to Regional Hub

Your journey begins with an international flight from your home country to a major Asian air hub - common cities include:

-> Chengdu

-> Xi’an

-> Urumqi

-> Beijing
(Flight options vary by region/season)

These hubs offer connecting services into Tibet’s plateau airport network.

From the hub, you continue on a domestic flight into the Ngari region at preferably Ali Pulan Airport. Both airports operate regular flights from Lhasa and are developing better connections to mainland China cities.

Touchdown at Mansarovar Region Airport

When you land at Ali Pulan Airport or Ngari Gunsa Airport, you are already in the sacred reaches of the Tibetan Plateau. This makes the journey more efficient and gives you more time to experience the holy land itself.

From Ali Pulan Airport:

You are only about 100–110 km from Mount Kailash and about 56 km from Lake Mansarovar

From Ngari Gunsa Airport:

You are about 200–250 km from the holy sites

Overland Travel by Road

Once you touch down, the next part of the journey unfolds by road, guided by experienced local drivers and Eco Trek Nepal’s team:

Private Vehicle Transfers

Our travellers are escorted in comfortable, high‑altitude‑ready vehicles - chosen to ensure safety, space, and reliability across plateau terrain.

Gradual Approach

As you travel toward Lake Mansarovar and Mount Kailash, your pace matches the region’s rhythm, allowing time to reflect and adjust.

Ease and Efficiency

These roads benefit from decades of infrastructure improvement in western Tibet. Depending on conditions and stops along the way, the drive lets you absorb the scale of the plateau without rushing the experience.

Why This Route Matters

The direct‑to‑Mansarovar airport route is the most time‑effective and spiritually oriented way to begin your pilgrimage.

Advantages of The Direct Route:
